listening to video/x-ms-asf online source on ubuntu (workaround)

If you try to listen anything from web sites such as russiandvd.com that has a wma video/x-ms-asf stream you are in a load of trouble.  Not only does linux not know how to deal with wma, wma file contains links to the actual stream with even more troublesome formats.  In case of russiandvd, wma links to a windows media stream and a real player RSP stream which is the default. Getting RSP to play is very difficult and sorry, but I didn’t get it. May be next time.  For now, this is a workaround for wma that has an HTTP stream source available using Ubuntu or OpenGEU. (I would usually work with Kubuntu, but this time I only needed it on my secondary laptop which i don’t use for work)  (I will not provide step-by-step-what-button-to-click instructions but will assume you know how to deal with package manager).

  1. Get rid of totem-gstreamer
  2. Install totem-xine
  3. Install FireFox plugin MediaPlayerConnectivity
  4. Just in case, get w32codecs from restricted repository.

Now, once you click on that “listen” button MediaPlayerConnectivity will take over. Select the HTTP source and it will open up totem player ready to buffer.
